Affiliate marketing can provide a good add on income for your business, and is certainly worth considering.
This is when a person or business recommends a product, service or business, and is financially rewarded when there is a sale. Sometimes, this works through links on a website, or sometimes, the sale is more overt – selling through endorsement by email.
Generally, the affiliate would email their own database and promote the company, and every time a sale is made the affiliate would earn a “commission”. A popular example would be selling tickets to a business event.
It is considered good practice to be totally transparent about any affiliate links you have by declaring them, either next to website links, or in the body of any email promotions.
Peppering your site with affiliate links, there are some words of caution.
Firstly, you need to think about this from your customers’ perspective. Are you promoting products or services that would be of genuine interest to your customers? If they were standing in front of you, would you be recommending the same thing? If not, then don’t even consider it.
Secondly, are these products or services a good fit?
Are they a good fit with your own moral and ethical code? And do they fit well with your own business? For example, you would think it mighty strange if we started promoting shoes or food on our site, considering it is based on helping you grow your business. And, no matter how much we love food and shoes, even we can’t find a logical connection. Hmmm, having said that, leave that one with us… 😉
You should also control the number of affiliate connections you have. We would never have more than one affiliate link in a category – in other words, we wouldn’t want to promote direct competitors. You also don’t want your website to start looking like an advertising site – remember the primary purpose of your website is to showcase your business, not other people’s.
But don’t let any of this put you off. Affiliate marketing can be very lucrative, and if you set up a reciprocal agreement, could help to generate significant additional business for your company too. It’s certainly worth considering adding to your marketing toolkit.
