When we write copy – for ourselves or for clients – the writing is just the first part of the process.
Then it’s time for a good edit.
One of the first things we do, is go through our copyand look for the word ‘that’. Nine times out of ten we can take it out.
Not only is it often unnecessary, but the copy reads better without it too.
Here’s an example:
We know that this is happening
We know this is happening
And an added bonus – we cut down the number of words used!
Of course, it isn’t always the case, so you do need to proofread and edit properly before cutting words:
This dress fits better than that dress
That’s more like it!
So, when you are next proofreading your writing – in whatever context – try taking out ‘that’.
