Yes, you read that title right!
We believe you should welcome unsubscribes…
Well, for several reasons:
- Any action is better than inertia
- There is no point in fooling yourself that a huge list of subscribers means they are all customers in the making
- A smaller list can often mean a reduced bill – most online email newsletter systems charge based on the number of subscribers
- Easier to manage – so you can see how effective your email marketing is – who is opening your messages, what is popular, and so on
Set up a nice friendly message that says you are sorry to see the subscriber go, and, of course, you would welcome them back at any time.
And that’s it. Don’t hound them, or try to persuade them they have made the wrong decision – move on.
And following on from that, why not do some unsubscribing of your own?
Take a look at who hasn’t opened your messages for the last 6 months and take them off your list. Again, this will give you confidence that the people who are on the list are interested. Granted, they aren’t customers, but hey give it time!
